Former Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov has dropped from the race to head the Bulgarian Socialist Party, paving the way for the reelection of incumbent chair and ex PM Sergey Stanishev.
Parvanov quit the race late Saturday night, before the some 800 delegates at the 48th Congress of the BSP cast their votes for a party leader.
For months, he and his former protégé Sergey Stanishev were locked in a leadership battle, with Parvanov, who was the President of Bulgaria in 2002-2012, hoping to regain the chairmanship of the Socialists that he held in 1997-2002.

The South Stream gas pipeline is project of high priority for Bulgaria, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has declared.
Borisov has pointed out the financial benefits of projects like South Stream that make use of his country's geostrategic location.
He added that the money gathered by Bulgaria from this project will be used for "retirement pensions, salaries and asphalt," the latter referring to ruling centrist-right GERB's priority on the construction of highway.

The left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) needs a stronger leader figure, according to former President Georgi Parvanov, who is running to take over as the party's new chair.
"It is with regret and envy that I have observed how Boyko Borisov has been pulling GERB like a locomotive since 2009," Parvanov told BSP members at the party's 48th congress on Saturday, referring to Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his centrist-right political formation.
The left-wingers would stand a chance if they have a "authentic and strong leader," Parvanov reckons.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has declared that his government is determined to fight crime and not allow the country returned to its violent and "subversive" past.
Monti's written statement followed a bomb explosion that took place on Saturday outside a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi. The blast killed one 16-year-old girl and injured at least seven others.

Ahmed Dogan, the controversial leader of Bulgaria's ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms party, has predicted that early elections will take place in the country.
Dogan believes the ruling centrist-right GERB is governing the country in a brutal and chaotic manner and without any vision.

Investigators are yet to find evidence suggesting the bomb that went off outside a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi is the work of the mafia, according to the country's Interior Minister Anna Maria Cancellieri.
A blast went off as students were arriving at Brindisi Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school at around 07:45 local time on Saturday, killing one 16-year-old girl and injuring 7.
"It's not the usual (method) for the Mafia," Cancellieri told Sky TG24 in a phone interview, as cited by international media.

Bulgarian MMA fighter Blagoi Ivanov who was stabbed nearly fatally on February 7 has declared that he is determined to return to the fighting ring and score more victories.
Ivanov gave a brief conference at Sofia's Pirogov hospital on Saturday, his first media appearance since he was stabbed in a Sofia night club. He is expected to leave the hospital next week.

No one can split the left-wing Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), according to Bulgaria's former President Georgi Parvanov, who is eager to take over as the political formation's leader.
"Forget the word split when it comes to BSP," Parvanov told reporters on Saturday, referring to statements that the leadership battle between him and the BSP's current chair, Sergey Stanishev, may prove divisive for the party.

A 16-year-old girl was killed and at least six students were injured as a bomb exploded in front of a school in the southern Italian city of Brindisi on Saturday.
The blast went off as students were arriving at the Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school at around 07:45 local time.

The Sofia City Court ruled Saturday to keep permanently behind bars alleged top criminal Evelin Banev AKA Brando.
Banev was arrested on May 16 in the Black Sea town of Sozopol on suspicions of money laundering.
The Prosecutor requested the measure on grounds he planned to secretly escape from Bulgaria to avoid the money laundering charges and trial.

The trail against Kalina Ilieva, the notorious former head of Bulgaria's Agriculture Fund, charged with forging her university diploma, will be launched at the Sofia District Court on June 4.
Ilieva faces up to eight years in prison over the fake master's degree diploma scandal.
The young woman is also charged with forging four other documents claiming she had graduated from the University of Engineering and Economics in Berlin.

The warning has been released by the Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, BAS. The alert is effective for the regions of Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Razgrad, Silistra, Dobrich, Shumen, Varna, Burgas, Sliven, Yambol, Haskovo, Kardzhali, and Stara Zagora where the expected precipitations can reach 20 to 30 liters per square meter.

Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz has echoed the proposal of the Nabucco Consortium for downsizing the previously ambitious EU-sponsored gas transit pipeline project, Nabucco.
Turkey's energy and natural resources minister said on Friday that it would not be appropriate to say that the Nabucco project was over, as cited by The Journal of Turkish Weekly.
Taner Yildiz said the project would probably survive as "Nabucco West" - a smaller, shorter pipeline, widely thought likely to begin at the Bulgarian-Turkish border rather than in Azerbaijan.

Corporate executives in Eastern Europe are least prepared for a possible breakup of the euro zone, the latest Financial Times /Economist Global Business Barometer survey has found.
The FT/Economist Global Business Barometer, a survey of more than 1,500 senior executives, exposes a lack of corporate preparation for an event that has become suddenly less unthinkable after 10 days of Greek political turmoil, The FT reported Friday.
According to the poll, more than three-quarters of executives surveyed on the eve of the latest flare-up in the eurozone crisis said their businesses had no contingency plans for the break-up of the single currency zone, even though the majority said such an outcome would have a significant impact on their companies.

The Russian opposition wants its next "March of Millions" protest rally scheduled for the Day of Russia, June 12, to be held closer to the Kremlin in the Russian capital Moscow.
Sergey Udaltsov, the leader of the Left Front opposition movement said in his Twitter on Friday, that the rally should be allowed to proceed from Tverskaya Zastava Square to Borovitskaya Square near the Kremlin on June 12.
Udaltsov said the protest would be organized by the same people as the May 6 protest that ended in violence and clashes with police when the protesters tried to break the police lines and move the event closer to the Kremlin, something that had not been agreed with the city authorities.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has snubbed the statements of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the humanitarian and stability situation in Syria.

Controversial Bulgarian businessman and ex-secret agent Alexey Petrov will remain permanently in detention, the country's court of appeals has ruled.
Petrov, who has been tried in the complicated high-profile 'Octopus' case for organized crime, was arrested at the beginning of May in the court hall after two witnesses said he pressured them to change their testimonials.
Petrov was first arrested in February 2010 and was not released on own recognizance until October, having spent what he claims to have been 8 months of abuse in the prison, during which his health allegedly deteriorated.

With the arrival of the summer tourist season the Bulgarian Consulate in the Russian capital is already issuing 3 000 visas daily, the Consulate said, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio Friday.

Renown Bulgarian volleyball player Matey Kaziyski has hinted he may boycott the upcoming Olympic Games in London due to the scandal that erupted between Bulgaria's volleyball federation and the country's national team coach.
Coach Radostin Stoychev was dismissed by the federation on Sunday, a day after his team was defeated by Germany in the second semifinal of the 2012 Olympic Games-European Qualification Tournament in Sofia.

A central unit for compensations in cases of slow justice may become operational in mid-June, according to Bulgarian Justice Minister Diana Kovacheva.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, she explained that the problem with providing compensation to the victims of slow court proceedings could be easily resolved with amendments to the Judiciary Act.
Kovacheva presented a project for the creation of a specialized body which will handle slow justice complaints and ensure fast remedies.

The bonuses that heads of political cabinets and other officials returned in the aftermath of a huge scandal will be used for the treatment of sick kids, rather than the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Balkan Wars.
At the next meeting of the government Prime Minister Boyko Borisov will propose more than BGN 600 000 from the returned bonuses account to be transferred for treatment of sick children, the government's press center surprisingly announced on Friday.

Direct flights between Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv and Turkey's Bursa will be launched withing three months, according to Doychin Angelov, Director of Plovdiv's airport.
Angelov has discussed the project with Bursa Mayor Recep Altepe and representatives of Turkish airline carriers during his visit to Turkey, Darik radio informs.

Bulgaria managed to negotiate special terms for the supply of Russian gas regardless of its abrupt withdrawal from the Burgas-Alexandroupolis oil pipeline and the Belene NPP energy projects, Russian media outlets note.
Gazprom is expected to offer Bulgaria a discount of 11.1% on gas prices in 2012 and may also eliminate intermediary companies from the supply chain in exchange for the country's support for the South Stream gas pipeline project, Russian business daily Kommersant writes, commenting on the ongoing talks between Bulgarian Economy and Energy Minister Delyan Dobrev and Gazprom President Alexei Miller in Moscow.

Nikolay Mihaylov, goalkeeper of Bulgaria's national football team, was involved in a heavy chain car accident that took place on his home country's Trakiya highway, according to a media report.
A 50-year-old man perished and five were injured in the chain car accident. Mihaylov was not not driving his vehicle and was not injured, the Bulgarian National Television says.

The modification introduced Thursday by the ad-hoc parliamentary committee on shale gas removed a provision specifying that the pressure used in oil and gas drilling cannot exceed 20 atmospheres.
